Deal!

We're coming up on Halloween, and if you know me, you know what I'm thinking about..

Get a poppy.  Wear a poppy.  It's time to start right now.

From the St. Catherines Standard, talking about donations to the Poppy Fund.

“We’re not selling them. If you don’t have any money, we’ll gladly give you one,” she [Frankie Cowan, poppy chairwoman for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 138 in St. Catharines] said. “Just wear it and wear it proud.”

The kids and I picked up our poppies already last Friday.  It's a big point of pride for me - absent the politics, those are our people who have done or are still doing they very best they can to make the world a better place.

"Poppies must be worn on a person’s left side, above the heart. That is the only criteria",  [Howard Cull, Branch 24 poppy chairman] said.

I bet they'd even forgive an oversight, so long as you wear it visibly and proudly.  Lest we ever forget.

I was actually a day late on that one this year.  I was downtown on the evening of the 1st to pick some weed^D^D^D^D DVDs and I seen two service cadets, so I did that deal then.

So, about that, I'm gonna put a bit of an awkward question out there: how much?  Of course, we all know that two generations of our boys went abroad and did necessary but not-fun things like marching in the muck and getting gassed and getting shot and basically having a horrible time, and now as a result we now get to have cool things like mp3s and videos and freedom and voting and stuff.  No doubt, that is freakin' excellent, and when it comes to poppy time I want to say nothing is too much.

So I've been going with $5 in recent years, myself.  Is that good, or am I a goddam cheap bastard?  I'm a guy with a decent job but not rich and credit companies laugh and point when I ride the bus past them.  Am I in the right ballpark on the poppy thing?

I tend to think so.  The tiny little slot the cadet had in his container, it was really hard to get paper money into it.  I think he was expecting quarters, myself.
